FALL RIVER: The Vanier Vipers girls cross country running team came home with their second back-to-back Mariner Zone championship banner, advancing to the provincials in Cheticamp on Oct. 22.

Joining the girls at provincials will be the boys cross country team from Georges P. Vanier Junior High in Fall River.

Speaking at the school during gym class on Oct. 12, the girls spoke about the experience and what it meant to win and punch their ticket for the road-trip to provincials in Cape Breton. The team is coached by Ron Nugent.

The team members that spoke to The Laker includes Nicole Miller; Bianca Daskalov, who recently moved to the area from B.C.; Mya Archibald; and Halley James

“It’s awesome that we were able to win the banner again,” said Miller. “I’m really proud of all the girls.”

“I’m really happy. It’s amazing to win the banner again,” added James, who came second with a time of 17:03 in the girls four kilometre run.

The girls team came second at the Mariner Zone, while finishing fourth at the Capital Regional events.

On the boys side, Nathan Leger was fifth overall with a time of 15:22.

“When I realized we were going to Cape Breton, I got really excited,” said Daskalov. “It’s a chance for us to keep our seasons going and represent our school.”

Coming from a school like Fall River to represent on the provincial stage is a huge achievement the girls said.

“It’s great we have so many athletes in a little town that can do well,” said James. “We’re the little school that can.”
