Waverley youth sell cupcakes for CIBC Run for the Cure on Oct. 6

WAVERLEY: Five Waverley youth showed their empathetic and caring side on Oct. 5.

The five—Connor Gillespie; Eden Hann; Max Hann; Lizzy and Maddy Giffin—all live in the Waverley area and all attend Waverley Memorial School. They sold cupcakes for the CIBC Run for the Cure, held Oct. 6. All but Lizzy and Maddy live in the Spider Lake Subdivision.

They came up with the idea on the morning of Oct. 5. With the oversight of an adult, they baked the cupcakes and then put the icing on it.

Maddy Giffin talked about why the group wanted to hold the fundraiser for the Run for the Cure.

”We’re selling the cupcakes so we can help raise money for run for the cure,” said Giffin.

When asked why, Lizzy Giffin answered the question with ease.

“People all around the world are going to races to help find a cure for cancer, and we want to help them,” said Lizzy.

Max Hann explained when the kids decided the sunny, but cool Saturday afternoon was the perfect time to hold the fundraiser.

“We decided today to do it,” said a shy Max. “We’re already on our second tray of cupcakes too.”

Maddy said the response from those in the neighbourhood was positive.

“We’ve had a lot of people stop by and support us,” she said.

They had had big and small cupcakes with the big ones costing 75 cents and the smaller ones 25 cents. They were in chocolate—which this reporter can attest to as being very scrumptious—and vanilla.

Meanwhile, Eden and Maddy took part in the Run for the Cure on Oct. 6.

The cupcake fundraiser saw the five raise close to $125 in a couple hours worth of selling from the end of their driveway.
