Cheema set to celebrate milestone

WAVERLEY: Plans are being finalized on what is expected to be a great weekend of celebrating 50 years of canoe and kayaking out of their Waverley-based club.

Cheema will be celebrating their 50th anniversary with a plethora of activities from Sept. 6-8 in Waverley.

It all begins Sept. 6 with a welcome home reception at the Cheema boathouse at 6 p.m. This will include the dedication of the Frank Garner boathouse along with Klondike Night for Gold Rush Days.

On Sept. 7, the sixth annual Cheema Ribfest will be held at the club adjacent to McDonald Sports Park on Cobequid Road in Waverley.

Over the last six years Cheema supporters have taken part in the Annual Ribfest, vying for the title of “Cheema Ribfest Champion.” The RibFest Village will take shape with cookers, barbecues, smokers and a big bonfire reaching flash point. Then, add, Bluegrass and Country music, into the mix, the atmosphere soon ignites with energy, which then stirs up stories, tales and exaggerations of past times at Cheema.

The stories and tales become even more interesting and entertaining as the afternoon progresses. Come down and join in on the jovial RibFest Village! In the evening an expert panel of experienced Cheema Judges will deliberate and determine the place finishers, and ultimately, the Cheema Ribfest Champion 2019.

At 2 p.m. the beer garden and live music will start, with Adam Baldwin set to perform at 4 p.m. Baldwin is a former Cheema paddler, and will perform songs from his latest album, No Rest for the Wicked, which the weekend of fun at Cheema plans to be.

At 5 p.m. the Cheema Ribfest dinner will be held, followed by the Hall of Fame inductions at 7 p.m.

At 9:30 p.m. Asia & NuGruv band will take the party goers into Sunday with their music and dancing tunes.

Asia & NuGruv, is an electrifying band and one of Atlantic Canada’s finest party bands. With a vast array of popular music ranging from, Motown, Disco, Funk, standard RnB hits and everything in between, they will have everyone dancing and having a great time.

On Sunday Sept. 8, from noon until 5 p.m. a paddlefest/open house at the clubhouse will take place with paddlers racing along Lake Thomas in canoe, war canoe, and Kayaking. All the events on Sept. 8 are open to the public.
