SYDNEY: It was a fitting end to the 2020 race season for one Waverley racer on Thanksgiving weekend.
Craig MacDonald wheeled the no. 8 legend painted in colours in tribute to his late dad to three Northside Tax Service Legend feature victories during Thanksgiving Thunder at Sydney Speedway on Oct. 10.
Racing was to happen on Oct. 11 as well, but race officials cancelled that due to heavy rains that were forecasted.
MacDonald drove away from his competition in each of the races, picking up three checkered flags along the route in his hot rod.
Austin MacDonald of Pictou drove the n0. 27 to three second place finishes, while Owen Mahar was third in the no. 66 machine in feature two and three.
In feature one, a Windsor Junction racer had a hand in helping the no. 87 of Danny Chisholm nab third. Chisholm’s driveshaft broke during the practice session, so since he was not running on this day due to lack of seat time, the no. 24 of Ayden Christensen loaned Chisholm his driveshaft for the race day.
Speaking of Christensen, he was racing his no. 24 Lively’s-Rooftight-S.B. Tirecraft-The Laker News-sponsored bandolero in the Dulux Paints Bayers Lake Bandolero division.
The Windsor Junction product drove the no. 24 to two runner-up finishes to Summerside’s Tanton Wooldridge, who swept all three features. Christensen was third in the third feature.
Brooke Dowe was third and second in two of the features, while Daniel Vandenberg was third in feature one.
In one of the races, Christensen held the lead and looked to be heading to grab a checkered flag until a late race caution, resulted in a restart and Woolridge, licking his lips at the chance, took advantage and stole the victory away from Christensen, a Waverley Memorial School student.
Wooldridge said after that race he was lucky he had the chance for the restart because it was Christensen’s race to win.
Christensen nabbed second overall in the championship for bandoleros based on his finishes.
In mini-stock racing, Nine Mile River’s Dave Matthews took part and appeared to have nabbed at least $88 for besting Kody Quinn as part of the track’s Kody Quinn bounty. However, he was disqualified post-race, and thus the win and bounty winnings that went with it was taken away.
In the other feature, Matthews was second, which was won by Quinn. The win denied the other drivers a chance at the $888 bounty to keep him off the podium in victory lane.
Reporter Pat Healey was at the race weekend as he was director of the TCM TV live broadcast on TimsCorner.tv.
