Back to school means time to slow down: RCMP

EAST HANTS: With students back in school, East Hants RCMP are reminding drivers to slow down and pay attention when travelling through school zones.

S/Sgt. Michael Balmaceda said drop-off and pick-up times can be particularly hectic, with plenty of vehicles, buses and children moving around schools.

Drivers are also being reminded of the rules when it comes to school buses.

If a bus has its red lights flashing, motorists must come to a complete stop at least five metres away. They must remain stopped until the red lights are turned off and/or the bus is underway.

The penalty for failing to stop is significant – a $410 fine and six demerit points.

For new drivers, six demerit points means an automatic six-month suspension.

RCMP are asking everyone to slow down, stay alert and give themselves a little extra time around schools as the new school year gets underway.
