HALIFAX: The Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting residents to its fifth annual tree giveaway program, with two giveaway events offering free trees to residents on Aug. 22 and 29.
Residents must register in advance to participate.
Registration will open at noon on Thursday, Aug. 13 at: halifax.ca/treegiveaway
Trees will be available on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last. A variety of tree species will be available, including a limited number of edible fruit trees.
Residents are limited to one tree per person or one tree per household. Unregistered walk-ups will not be permitted.

Time: 9 a.m. to noon
Location: 3800 Mackintosh Street, Halifax
Residents can walk, roll, cycle, take Halifax Transit or drive to pick up their tree.
Totes will be available to help safely transport your new tree regardless of the transportation method you choose.Â
Municipal Urban Forestry staff will be available to answer questions and provide information about how to plant and care for a new tree.
Each tree planted helps grow the Halifax region’s urban forest and supports healthier, greener communities.

The Tree Giveaway program supports the municipality’s Strengthening Communities priority in the 2026-2030 Strategic Plan by helping expand the urban tree canopy and protect green spaces for future generations.
The program also supports the goals of the municipality’s Urban Forest Management Plan and HalifACT by encouraging residents to plant trees and contribute to a more sustainable and climate-resilient municipality.
Since 2022, the municipality will have given approximately 5,000 trees to residents, including those distributed through this year’s program.
