FALL RIVER: It might not be Christmas time, but the Fall River Lions Christmas Express is stepping up to help those struggling due to the COVID19 pandemic.

In a release to The Laker News, Stephanie Dube, one of the volunteer organizers with the non-profit organization, said everyone in the area has been impacted by the pandemic in some form.

“The Fall River Christmas Express is hoping to help those having a hard time financially,” said Dube. “If you live in the LWF and surrounding area, we are working to assist with a basket of food bi-weekly to help ease the burden.”

The LWF area consists of Lakeview; Windsor Junction; and Fall River. The Christmas Express has partnered with the LWF Ratepayers Association, Fall River Sobeys, and The Vegetorium to support this venture.

“Because in the communities we call Riverlake – Fall River, Grand Lake, Lakeview, Waverley, Wellington, and Windsor Junction – neighbours help neighbours,” she said.

However, usually they can draw on the community to assist through food donation drop offs or the Lions Christmas Parade.

“But in this time of COVID-19, we have to do things a little differently. There can’t be a parade, or a food donation drop off,” said Dube. “Just like you donate food and money over the holidays, we’re counting on you to help your neighbours now with a gift online. Your gift will go directly to providing families in need a box of essential groceries.”

The food drive’s goal is $25,000 to distribute food boxes to 60 families every two weeks starting Saturday, May 9.
