FALL RIVER/HANTS EAST: The search continues for candidates to represent the N.S. Progressive Conservative party in two local ridings, the leader of the party said on Dec. 21.
Tim Houston was being interviewed by The Laker News in a year-end interview when asked where the party was at for candidates in Waverley-Fall River-Beaver Bank and Hants East. To date the NDP are the only party to announce candidates in both ridings—Abby Cameron for Hants East and Christina McCarron for the Waverley-Fall River-Beaver Bank riding.
“Those are two areas where we don’t have an official nominated candidate,” said Houston. “I can say we have very good people who are interested, and I have been meeting with them.”
At this point, Houston was interrupted as Winnie the dog made an appearance wanting to get in on the interview.
Houston continued with his answer.
“We’re talking to people in those constituencies, but we don’t have the formal candidate nominated,” he said. “In the New Year, you’ll see us working through those ridings to get candidates nominated.”
He said the party has 18 incumbents now and have 12 candidates nominated across the province, making their total at 30. There are 55 seats in N.S. In those 12, there are seven women and five men.
“When people look at the quality of the people we’re nominating, they will be impressed,” said Houston. “Good, good people are coming forward saying they want to stand up for my community and I want to do it as a member of the PC Party.”
Both MLA Margaret Miller and MLA Bill Horne have said they are not re-offering.
“Both of those constituencies have no incumbent so they’re wide open,” he said.
Houston is expecting a provincial election in the Spring of 2021.
