ELDERBANK: Three buildings at a Scouts camp in the Musquodoboit Valley have been lost due to a suspicious fire on Christmas Day.

Firefighters from departments throughout the Musquodoboit Valley, East Hants, and Colchester County areas were paged for the fire at Camp Nedooae, one of two major structure fires in HRM on Christmas Day.

Crews from Station 36 (Meagher’s Grant); Station 38 (Middle Musquodoboit); Station 40 (Dutch Settlement); Station 35 (Cooks Brook); Station 47 (Goffs); and Station 24 (Musquodoboit Harbour); along with HRM Fire division chiefs were paged to the fire at 9:41 p.m.

Fire crews had to cut the locked gate before continuing in and confirming a fully involved structure fire.

Mutual aid responded to the scene from Milford Fire (three units); and an engine from Stewiacke Fire, who went to Station 38 for coverage.

On twitter people were reminiscing about the times they spent there.

“I camped there as kids in the 90’s when I was in guides,” said one twitter post. “Such a shame to hear about this, especially at Christmas.”

Many others on social media were hoping it was not arson and called the devastating fires sad for the community.

The facility had some recent upgrades done as it had hosted the recent Canadian Scouts Jamboree.

Firefighters were on scene until around 6 a.m. The scene was handed over to Halifax District RCMP for investigation purposes.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
