LANTZ: The Peter Smith Memorial Fields in Lantz were busy over the weekend as the Braeden Bannister Memorial Slo-Pitch Tournament brought teams together for a weekend of baseball, community and remembrance.

The Laker News was on hand for some of the early action Saturday, capturing plenty of moments from the tournament as players took to the field in honour of Braeden Bannister.

Bannister was remembered as an exceptional young man, a stellar student, athlete and volunteer firefighter who was taken from his family and community far too soon at the age of 15.

The memorial tournament is about much more than what happens between the foul lines. It continues Braeden’s legacy of helping others and making a difference in the community.

According to the tournament organizers, the Braeden Bannister Memorial initiative has helped place automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in local schools and daycares, awarded more than 130 bursaries for post-secondary education, supported local food banks, families in need and children’s camps, helped children participate in sports and recreation programs, and funded community projects, local athletes and recreation facilities.

The tournament provided another opportunity for family, friends, players, volunteers and community members to come together while keeping Braeden’s memory alive.

“We play to remember.”

And judging by the smiles, competition and camaraderie on display Saturday at the Peter Smith Memorial Fields, Braeden’s memory continues to make a positive impact well beyond the ballfield.
