ELMSDALE: The NDP candidate for Hants East is no stranger to talk centered around the need for school replacements in both Milford and Kennetcook.,

As the former editor and reporter with The Weekly Press and The Laker (print papers), Abby Cameron covered and heard from many residents about the state of Hants East Rural High and Hants North Rural High.

The province recently announced its capital project list for the coming year. Neither of the schools in East Hants were on the list.

During a sit-down interview at an Elmsdale coffee shop, alongside NDP leader Gary Burrill, Cameron talked about the concerns she has heard regarding school facilities at HERH and HNRH.

“Hants North has needed one for as long as I have been here,” said Cameron. “It’s been on the five-year capital plan forever it seems.”

Burrill and Cameron both agreed the replacement of schools, like HNRH and HERH, is one of the downfalls of the province doing away with school boards.

“When we had school boards the needs for a new school in Kennetcook, the needs for a new school in Milford, these were something that were a vital part of the democratic school politics of the region,” said Burrill. “Without school boards and with all of the decisions based out of Halifax, the local voice has been lost.

“The need for new school facilities in Hants County is a clear example of this.”
