FALL RIVER: The NDP candidate for Waverley-Fall River-Beaver Bank is focused on ensuing Nova Scotia’s environment is looked after for generations to come.

During a sit-down interview at a local Fall River coffee shop with NDP Leader Gary Burrill in the community, Christina McCarron was asked why the environment is an important part of her early on platform for when a provincial election is called.

“I think clearcutting our forests is too extreme,” said McCarron. “I think it’s especially important for our environment that there be less clearcutting.

“I think the near extinction of the Mainland Moose is also a big problem.”

Burrill said the questions is whether we as a species can summon the forces needed to deal with climate change.

“That’s been so sharply in the intergovernmental panel report which speaks of what is required,” he said. “This is a great challenge of our lifetime.

“The focus and success of which we need it will define the shape of our lifetimes and that of generations to come.”

He spoke about balancing economy and environmental issues in the province.

“It is both our environment and our economy or nothing, both which we now extremely know they are linked,” he said. “There is a general understanding of the growth, the investment, the development, the jobs, this is all for a sustainable economy.

“The environment and economy are as closely intertwined as two worlds of concern can possibly be.”
