FALL RIVER: Fire investigators are seeking a cause into a conflagrant that destroyed an abandoned home shortly after supper time on Jan. 27.

Firefighters from Station 45 Fall River; Station 41 Waverley; Station 42 Wellington; Station 43 Grand Lake; Quint 9 Sackville; Tac 48 Beaver Bank; and HRM Fire Rehab Unit. There were 12 units, made up out of six tankers; two rescue units; a Tac unit; and three engines.

Billowing smoke could be seen in photos sent to The Laker News over the skyline from Windsor Junction Road by the train tracks as well as far away as Beaver Bank, one follower messaged to The Laker News.

In photos snapped by Andrew Nichols, one of those who called 911, raging flames could be seen as it levelled the home.

Dean said the two-storey house was fully involved as firefighters arrived.

“Our fire crews went to the defensive mode to ensure the safety of our crews since there was nobody inside,” said Dean. “There was nothing we could save at that point.

“We did a risk assessment, and the decision was to do a defensive fire attack, and that’s what we did.”

Fall River Road by George Jackson Road reopened about 8:15 p.m.

Dean said fire investigators were just arriving on scene as he spoke to The Laker News.

Some nearby residents commented online that the fire was scary for them with how close it was to their residences.

He said the house has two chimneys so that played a part in them going defensive in case they were to collapse and the walls.

“We put some water on the fire and made sure it didn’t extend to the woods,” he said. “There’s always dangers when you come to a fire, but we try to do our job as safe as we can.”

Dean said the investigators would hopefully give them a better idea as to what started it.
