HRM provides service updates with winter storm hitting province

HALIFAX: The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising that winter conditions are expected this evening into tomorrow, with significant snowfall and high winds.

Crews are monitoring this weather system and are applying salt and brine to streets and sidewalks.

A reminder that the overnight winter parking ban will be in effect from 1 to 6 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 8 to facilitate snow clearing.

The following are updates on municipal services:

Halifax Transit

Halifax Transit will be ending all bus, Access-A-Bus and ferry service at 7 p.m. All trips in service prior to 7 p.m. will complete their route before ending. Service will not resume until at least 10 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 8. An update will be made tomorrow morning regarding transit service resuming, depending on weather conditions.

Updates to service will also be posted to Halifax.ca/transit and @hfxtransit on Twitter.

Parks & Recreation

Due to the expected weather conditions, many recreation facilities will be closing today at 6 p.m. with a possible reopening at noon on Monday, Feb. 8. An announcement will be made by 10 a.m. regarding reopening, rentals and recreation programming. Please call your local recreation centre for further information.

The Halifax Public Gardens will remain closed on Monday, Feb. 8.

Solid Waste

Solid Waste curbside collection of garbage, organics and recyclables has been cancelled for Monday, Feb. 8. For residents who would typically have collection on this day, there will be an allowance for double the garbage limits next collection cycle on Monday, Feb. 22.  Residents are asked to not place any materials curbside tomorrow. 

The municipality would also like to advise the public and commercial solid waste haulers the following facilities will be closed on Monday:

  • The materials recycling facility at 20 Horseshoe Lake Dr.
  • The composting facilities at 80 Gloria McCluskey Ave. in Burnside and 61 Evergreen Place in Goodwood

Office Closure

All municipal offices will be delaying opening until noon on Monday, Feb. 8.
