WELLINGTON: The lone occupant and two pets, a dog, and a cat, of a home on Highway 2 in Wellington escaped an early morning fire Feb. 11 uninjured, Halifax Fire officials say.

The fire at 4316 Hwy 2, next to the Wellington Bakery and Just Around the Corner Store, was called in to 911 at 4:25 a.m. Firefighters responded from Station 42 Wellington; Station 41 Waverley; Station 43 Grand Lake; Station 45 Fall River; Elmsdale Fire; and Tac 48 Beaver Bank.

HRM Fire Rehab and fire investigators also attended the scene.

Halifax District RCMP also responded to assist with traffic control at the site. The road was closed for a couple of hours in the vicinity of the fire as crews had hose across the road.

Gord West, District Chief for Division 4 with Halifax Fire, spoke to The Laker News about the fire.

“When crews arrived on scene there was fire in the loft,” said West. “Everyone in the home was able to get out okay.”

The attack by the firefighters went smooth, West said.

“Everything went well considering the minus 17-degree temperatures,” he said.

According to @HRMFireNews on Twitter, Incident Command had called the fire under control by 5:38 a.m., about an hour and some after being called to the scene.

At that time, fire crews began working on overhaul and watching for hot spots.

Fire News had live tweets of the fire on their twitter timeline, keeping people informed as the fire occurred. The Laker News retweeted and posted on their Facebook page using that info.

All fire crews had left the scene by 8:30 a.m.

The property owner told The Laker News later on Thursday they were not certain how much damage was done and were unsure if the person living there would need any assistance from the community.

West said the cause of the blaze is under investigation.
