FALL RIVER: A local Fall River race car driver who pilots a Lightning hot rod at Scotia Speedworld took his talent to the virtual racing world in a Tim’s Corner Motorsports Special Event on iRacing.
Steve Matthews, a Bedford native who now calls Fall River home, got up on the wheel in the Crawford Race Shop super late model 150 at the virtual Stafford Motor Speedway. The race was broadcasted live on VIDANE TV.
Matthews brought home the no. 56 Josh Collins Racing hot rod in third place after qualifying in 13th place. He finished second in the first heat to Mike Alexander.
In seven starts of TCM special events, Matthews best finish is second in the Legend cars at South Boston on April 9. He also has three top fives and four top tens in seven starts.
Cory Hall took the lead from Nick Codner with 30 laps to go at Stafford and held on for the checkered flag.
Fifty-nine drivers attempted to qualify for 28 spots in the feature. Mike Alexander paced the field in qualifying and won the first heat. Hall, Matthew Barkhouse and Josh Langille also took home heat wins. John Biron and Paul McCollum won Last Chance Qualifiers.
The Crawford Race Shop 150 saw seven caution periods and took one hour, one minute to complete.
In the TCM 125 at Lanier on April 12, Matthews was in second for much of the first half of the race before a pit stop. He rallied back for a sixth-place finish.
Windsor Junction’s Ayden Christensen also attempted to qualify for both big races; however he did not make the top field in either.
