WINNIPEG, MB.: It’s been a superb start to the Canada Games for Team Nova Scotia athletes on the waters in Winnipeg, M.b., and that includes two Waverley athletes.
Mark Wiseman, from Cheema, teamed with Hammonds Plains’ Bret Himmelman to grab bronze in the C2, 500-metre race.
“It was a good race,” said Wiseman. “We did the best we could. The two crews that beat us, we couldn’t have asked for better guys to be first and second.”
“We put up a hard fought race and had fun doing it. It’s been a great experience so far for both of us,” added Himmelman.
It was both Wiseman and Himmelman’s first events of the Canada Games, and they both have hopes to add to that bronze medal with more hardware.
“Both of us have more races where we can get more medals,” said Himmelman. “This is just a good start to a good week of racing.”
Wiseman said the dominance so far by the Bluenose crew on the water is sort of expected as they are considered a powerhouse, but at the same time you can never rest on your laurels; they still have to show they can do that.
He said the team has had a chance to watch their fellow N.S. athletes in other sports compete, including indoor volleyball.
Himmelman said both of them couldn’t be more happy with the bronze, and now are preparing for the C4, 200-metre race they have together on Wednesday morning.
“We’re looking to strike gold on that,”said Himmelman.
He said while they have enjoyed watching other events, they are remaining focused on the task at hand.
“First we have business to take care of,” said Himmelman. “We still have two or three races and want to represent the province as best we can.”
The two agreed they want more medals.
“We’re happy with bronze,” said Wiseman, as Himmelman finished “but we’re thirsty for more.”
Meanwhile, fellow Waverley resident Mark Marschalko captured silver with Zane Clarke; Robert Laureijs; and Jacob Steele in the K-4, 1,000-metre race.
