WAVERLEY: Dr. Robert Strang offered some clarity regarding those who may have come into contact with someone identified as a close contact for a COVID-19 exposure at Waverley Memorial Elementary.

The person identified was a student, but they did not find out until after playing a game of the sport their in with teammates over last weekend that they were a close contact of a COVID-19 exposure at the school.

The parents let the other teammate parents know when they were advised of being a close contact, but this was not til the day after the game was played when they were told.

Dr. Strang was asked if in that situation, would the teammates be determined to be close contacts as well during the COVID-19 briefing on Dec. 12.

“It would really depend on the individual who’s the contact getting tested and monitoring themselves for symptoms and appropriate testing as guided by local public health to determine if the people they were in contact with were also potentially exposed.”

He said with the example given, it really shouldn’t happen.

“If people have been identified as a close contact, then they need to follow public health rules,” he said. “If they’re fully vaccinated, they need to isolate and at least three days, 72 hours, take a test and they have to stay isolated until they get that negative test.

“Everybody needs to understand that and follow that. If their not fully vaccinated, they have a longer isolation period.”
