FALL RIVER: A Fall River biathlon athlete has had a great few weeks of confidence building, claiming two gold medals.

Madison Taljaard, who calls Fall River home, attended a meet in Fort Kent, Maine in early February after the Atlantic Cup 2 in PEI was cancelled due to icy trail conditions. Taljaard went to Maine with another athlete under the supervision of Biathlon PEI.

Taljaard, who attends Kings Edgehill School, shot 80 per cent—getting eight of 10 targets—to capture gold in a field of five athletes in the first day. It was her first gold medal of her racing career, after earning many silvers.

The next day saw the pursuit race where the athletes all start at the same time – called a Mass Start. Taljaard came up with another solid performance, claiming her second gold medal.

It was a confidence builder for Taljaard who is off to Red Deer, Alta. this week to represent N.S. at the Canada Games.
