HALIFAX: The Environment Department has issued three new approvals for pesticide spraying covering 1,498 hectares.

The approvals are all for forestry companies, for aerial spraying. The approvals are available at http://novascotia.ca/nse/pesticide-spray/ .

There are also three previously issued multi-year approvals that allow spraying this year.

Health Canada’s Pest Management Regulatory Agency determines whether a product is safe for use. The province only approves pesticide spraying using chemicals that have been approved by this federal agency.

Quick Facts:
— approvals contain specific terms and conditions that must be met, such as maintaining separation distances and notifying the public about spraying times
— spraying is done for forestry management and safety along transportation routes
— all provinces allow pesticide spraying
— there is no aerial spraying taking place on Crown land in 2020
