FALL RIVER: Steve Streatch confirmed that HRM will be contributing money to the tune of $119,000 for two properties it owns as part of the Local Improvement Charge (LIC) for the Fall River water project.

The representative of Waverley-Fall River-Musquodoboit Valley said HRM will be paying for the Seniors Friendly Centre and the Gordon R. Snow Community Centre/Station 45 Fall River fire.

“That was a significant investment and an act of good will on behalf of the municipality in support of the community and in support of trying to lower the LIC burden on the local residents,” said Streatch during a Nov. 6 interview at The Turtleback Tap & Grill.

He did say there have been complications that crews from Dexter Construction have come up on.

“That’s no different than any other project, but they’re being dealt with in the proper way,” said Streatch. “The traffic and around the clock construction has been problematic. I have taken many calls and complaints, but for the most part people have seen this as short term pain for long term gain.

“The project has got to come in on time and on budget. The efforts that the contractor is putting forward will enable that to happen.”

Streatch said there will be significant drilling taking place under the railway tracks to connect the Pockwock water to the line in Fall River.

He said the other significant development is that council approved an amendment to the funding motion to allow a modification to the ask being sent to the province and federal governments to now include areas within the approved water service boundary area.

“That would include the majority of old Fall River Village,” said Streatch. “My hope would be that the provincial and federal government see fit to help us cost share not only finishing Phase 2 along Highway 2 to the overpass, but to also help us fund bringing city water to residents in old Fall River Village who have waited so many years for that service.”
