SHUBENACADIE: The month of May continued to see the number of calls for local fire departments on the lower side of things due to restrictions related to COVID19.
Below are the calls from Shubenacadie Fire; Indian brook Fire; Elmsdale Fire; Rawdon Fire; Enfield Fire; Lantz Fire; Mount Uniacke Fire; Milford Fire; Stewiacke Fire; Kennetcook Fire; and Nine Mile River Fire.
Shubenacadie Fire responded to six calls in the month, led by two grass fires and two motor vehicle collisions. They also attended to one structure fire and one car fire.
For Elmsdale Fire, firefighters responded to six calls, led by three motor vehicle collisions. They were also paged for one brush fire; one illegal burn; and one alarm activation.
Stewiacke Fire had the second busiest month of all the fire departments to report for the month, responding to seven calls. This was led by three motor vehicle collisions.
The department also attended to two grass fires; one mutual aid request to a neighbouring department; and one mud rescue.
In the mud rescue, the department said on its Facebook page they we were called to assist a person stuck in the mud on the Stewiacke River. The person was up to their waist in mud and unable to free themselves.
“We were able to safely extricate this person with the assistance of some bystanders,” said the post. “We encourage everyone to please be careful as the mud bordering the river can be unpredictable and you may sink unexpectedly.”
Firefighters with Kennetcook fire attended to five calls in May, all single calls. The responses included one chimney fire; one motor vehicle collision; one grass fire; one rescue; and one commercial alarm activation.
Indian Brook Fire responded to three calls in the month, with the calls being one grass fire; one motor vehicle collision; and one structure fire.
Enfield Fire responded to nine calls, the most of any department for the month. That tally was led by two mutual aid requests to a neighbouring department; two brush fires; and two alarm activations.
They also heard their pagers tone off for one medical assist; one vehicle fire; and one motor vehicle collision.
Milford Fire had four calls in the month, all mutual aid requests to neighbouring departments.
Nine Mile River fire responded to three calls. They were paged out for one illegal burn; one mutual aid request; and one motor vehicle collision.
In Mount Uniacke, firefighters had a slow month with just two calls—a motor vehicle collision and another call.
Lantz Fire had two mutual aid requests to a neighbouring department and one illegal burn call.
At Rawdon Fire, they had a busy month with seven calls, led by three mutual aid requests. They also heard their pager tone for two brush fires; one chimney fire; and one vehicle fire.
