NORMAL, ILL.: A Fall River women’s soccer player has set a new record for career shutouts by a goalie with the Illinois State University Red Birds.
Haley Smith was solid in net making five saves as her Red Birds blanked Indiana State 3-0 in recent play between the two teams in the Missouri Conference. The win improved ISU’s record to 11-4 on the season and continued an unblemished 4-0 record in the Missouri Conference this season.
ISU’s nine-game winning streak ties the program record for longest streak, which occurred in both the 2013 and 2014 seasons. This was the fifth straight shutout for the ‘Birds, a program-record for the most consecutive shutouts.
Smith has played in the teams 15 of 16 games played, allowing 14 goals against in 1,240.35 minutes played. She’s made 60 saves for a 1.02 Goals Against Average and an 11-4 record.
The shutout was number 24 of her Red Birds career, setting a new all-time shutout record for the Red Birds.
“Tonight was a monumental game for our team and program,” said head coach Brad Silvey in a team release. “First, the win and the collective team effort to battle on the road against a very determined Indiana State team was inspired soccer. For this group to earn the consecutive shutout record and for Haley Smith to break the all-time shutout record was simply special. The records were earned tonight, but this is a culmination of work and effort over an extended period of time to tell a remarkable story.”
Smith stood strong in goal, posting five saves on the night and improving to 60 on the season. She currently sits at 321 career saves, 20 saves away from Becky Feldmann’s program record 341 saves.
