Waverley Legion celebrates going mortgage free

WAVERLEY: There was reason to celebrate at the Waverley Legion on Nov. 9.

The Legion announced they had officially paid off their mortgage of approximately $330,000 —one they started to pay on some 20-plus years ago.

At an event where members of the community were welcomed to come see what the Legion is all about and how they can join to keep it thriving for years to come, President Ken Mallett spoke briefly to the crowd.

At the end of his speech it was time to burn the mortgage and he did just that lighting it on fire to much applause from the crowd of about 35 people. That included former NDP MP Peter Stoffer, and many other Legion members, Veterans and community residents.

Peter Stoffer was in attendance at the mortgage burning for the Legion. Here he is pictured with Steve Sinnott, vice president of the Waverley Legion, sharing a chuckle. (Healey photo)
