FALL RIVER: A long-time volunteer with the Girl Guiding movement in the Fall River area was selected as the recipient for week 3 of the #WeMakeHappy campaign, a partnership between The Laker News and the Dairy Queen in Fall River.
Vicki Gomes has been involved in Girl Guides since she was six-year-sold. Now some 37 years later, she remains involved in the role of Area Commissioner for Tri-Waters, which covers the Rockingham/Birch Cove communities of Halifax, to Bedford, Sackville, Mount Uniacke, Waverley and Fall River.
She oversees Guiding within those communities, including recruiting new volunteers, organizing events, and assisting the Districts in any way she can. Gomes also assists at her daughter’s unit when they need an extra pair of hands.
“We were taught as kids to always give back to our community as it makes where we live a much better place,” said Gomes.
Since March, Gomes has continued to support Guiding in the area while still working and managing home school for her elementary aged children.
She spoke of why she chose and stuck with Girl Guides to be involved with.
“It’s awesome to see the kids grow up, to mentor the girls, and show them different experiences and give them different opportunities,” said Gomes.
Gomes was surprised and flattered to have been nominated for the #WeMakeHappy campaign.
“It’s nice to be recognized in the community for the things you do,” she said.
Do you know someone that makes happy in our community of Fall River and Area (Lakeview, Waverley, Windsor Junction, Fall River, Fletchers Lake, Wellington, Grand Lake, Oakfield, and Enfield HRM) then please submit their name with a short explanation of why you’re nominating them/why they make happy in the community.
