WINDSOR JUNCTION: An HRM staff report on area rates that community groups across the municipality utilize, including the LWF Ratepayers Association (LWFRA), is expected back before regional council in the not-too-distant future.
The area rate report will impact how facilities like the Windsor Junction Community Centre (WJCC) are funded. The LWF Ratepayers have an area rate which is collected by HRM and given to the LWFRA to fund the activities at the WJCC.
Steve Streatch said the only thing that has changed is the surplus the LWFRA collected above and beyond what the WJCC required.
“Council indicated that was not sustainable, and staff are currently working on a report to firm those details up,” he said. “I think when that comes back the community will have to reflect on what’s in that report.”
He said he would await the report before commenting further.
WJCC chairwoman Colleen Menard said having a secure funding source is a key piece of information our the WJCC board needs when planning their operations programming.
“The WJCC Board is available to hear what the councillor has to say, however, to date, we have not been consulted in any way by the Councillor or HRM staff on area rate changes, or changes to our structure,” she said.
