LAKE BANOOK: Cheema athletes captured 32 medals at the recently held Canadian Canoe/Kayak national championships, held on Lake Banook in Dartmouth.
Overall, the Waverley-based club won eight gold, led by two from Craig Spence; 18 silver; and six bronze medals. Mark Wiseman picked up four silvers and a bronze medal.
Besides Spence, Hunter Morrissey (Jr. men’s K-1, 1,000 metres); Marshall Hughes (senior men’s K-1, 500 M); Sloan MacKenzie (U-16 WC1, 200 m); Ashley Thomas (WK1, 200m (ID)); and Tristan Kowal (MK1, 200m (ID)), won gold. The team of Seto/Thomas also brought home top honours winning the Mix K2, 200m race.
Silver was won by the Senior Men’s War Canoe and U17 men’s war canoe as well as Spence in Junior Men’s C1, 200m; Sawyer Capes (U16 MK1, 200 m); Michelle Russell won two silvers (Senior WK1, 200m; Sr WK1, 1,000M); Hughes in Senior MK1 1,000m; the team of Scarola/Hetzler (Jr MC2, 200m); Hall/Korisanszky (Senior MC2, 500 m); Sampson/Wiseman (U19 MC2, 500m); Morrissey/Morrissey (Junior MK2 1,000m); Sampson/Wiseman (U19, MC2 1,000m); Hall/Korisanszky/Lakner/Spence (Open IC4 1,000 m); Sampson/Sampson/Koch/Wiseman (U19 IC4 1,000m); Hughes/Lang; Morrissey/Morrissey (Senior MK4 1,000m); Sam Hall/Russell/Becca Sampson/MacKenzie (Junior WC4 500m); Samantha Waite (WK1 200m (ID); Casey/Waite (Mix K2 200m (ID)).
Winning bronze were Mason Koch of Enfield (U16 MC1, 1,000M); Wiseman (U19 MC1, 1,000 m); Korisanszky/Spence (Senior MC1 1,000 m); Emily Burke/Kady Leard/Erin Donovan/MacKinnon (U19 WK4 500 M) and Adam Brien/Capes/LeDrew/Cam Nowen (U17 MK4 1,000m).
