FALL RIVER: After 10-plus years of competing on the track-and-field scene, Bridget Deveau said the competition has taken it’s toll on her body.

In a post on her Facebook and Instagram pages, the Fall River product announced that she is retiring from the sport. She represented Canada at the recently held 2019 FISU Summer Universiade in Naples, Italy.

“I did not have the performance I was hoping for, but my body was definitely telling me it’s time to shut it down,” said Deveau in her post. “I’m so thankful I had the privilege to run my last laps around the track wearing my country’s flag on my chest, a dream I have had since I started running track so many years ago.

“I will forever be grateful of everything this sport has given me and all of the friends I have made and support I have received. I am so proud to have represented Chebucto Athletics, Nova Scotia, UMass, and now Canada too.”

She thanked her coach at UMass coach David Jackson who has had such an impact on her during the past six year and got her to Naples.

“That big red circle will always hold a special place in my heart and I will always be a part of the Athletics community,” she said. “Thank you to everyone who has had an impact on me and helped me to go after my goals. I’m so thankful.”
