TRURO: In a battle of well-matched teams, only one team could come away gold medal winners and unfortunately for the Lockview High Dragons girls volleyball team it wasn’t to be.
The Dragons lost a very hard-fought School Sport Nova Scotia (SSNS) Division 1 girls volleyball championship final to the CEC Cougars in Truro on Saturday afternoon.
Lockview won the first set of the championship final 25-20, however CEC regrouped and took the second set 25-23.
In the third set, CEC had the better advantage winning 15-11 to claim gold.
The Dragons earn silver for their effort, a good accomplishment for a team that has been together for quite awhile, including playing together with the Fall River Fury Volleyball club.
Lockview opened the two-day tournament with straight two set victories over Inverness (25-15, 25-210; and Parkview (25-11, 25-17); before falling to CEC in the final round robin game in three sets. They won the firsts et 25-20 but fell 15-14 and 15-9 in the second and third sets.
That left them in second place in Pool A and meant a date with Citadel High in the semi-final. They won two sets to one to advance to the final, and a rematch with CEC for provincial gold.
The bronze medal was won by Sydney Academy, who defeated Citadel High.
In the gold medal game, LHS and CEC were very even and took turns trading the lead until the Cougars prevailed in the third set.
All of the Lockview players will be playing with the Fury Volleyball Club this season, although split between different Fury teams.
