FALL RIVER: A Notice of Motion will be coming to HRM Regional Council this Tuesday, Nov. 10, from newly elected District 1 Councillor Cathy Deagle Gammon seeking to move forward a project that will benefit many sports organizations in the Fall River community.
Deagle Gammon confirmed she will be informing her fellow councillors that she intends to bring a full motion asking for the support of her colleagues at a later council meeting that would provide the Turf Field project HRM’s support.
“When I was campaigning, I had met with here of the committee members and heard about their idea and proposal,” said Deagle Gammon. “It was nice to hear about what they want to do and to meet with them now as councillor and hear what they have done since then.
“It was really nice to get up to speed on it.”
The Turf Field would replace the current sports field at Lockview High School and would include a walking track around it as well as a new entry/exit into the high school through to Kinclaven Drive. It currently has just one way in and out to Lockview Road.
The project is time sensitive as any project built from the funding support from the feds must be done by Dec. 31, 2021. Committee members hope construction could begin by summer 2021.
Currently, the federal government and provincial governments have said, through MP Darrell Samson and MLA Bill Horne, that they support the project and will help with funding.
However, HRM must give it their stamp of approval and move it forward to the province and federal governments, before it can get their seal of approval.
“I get to make my first Notice of Motion at the Nov. 10 meeting to get this in front of HRM,” she said. “As councillor my job is to get it to council, and we’ve asked for it to be expedited. The motion will come, and my job is to ensure council has enough information to make a decision that will see it on moving forward.
“The beauty part of it is that with the province and federal governments ready to come on board, that makes all the difference in the world in these kinds of initiatives.”
