WINDSOR JUNCTION: Barb Pike couldn’t believe what she was seeing in front of her when husband Sam asked her to look on the table in their Windsor Junction home.
Sam likes to check their weekly lottery tickets online and on Thursday morning, July 26, he discovered the couple’s good fortune. Alone at home, he considered calling Barb to share the news, but she was en route to an appointment at the IWK with one of their foster children.
Not wanting to interrupt her while she was driving, he left the ticket on the table and waited for her return.
“He told me, ‘Have a look at that,’” Barb said, referring to the winning numbers online. “Read the numbers … and now check the ticket.”
She recalled saying “Oh my heavens” when she realized they had won, but Sam described it differently.
“I think it set her on stun,” he said.
The two are both retired, they continue to work as foster parents for medically fragile children. This labour of love began more than 25 years ago when Barb saw a foster parent campaign and thought “Why not?”
More than 60 children have benefited from their love and compassion over the years.
The couple will use their lottery winnings to take a trip to Tahiti and cross that dream off their bucket list. The trip will coincide with their 44th wedding anniversary next spring.
Other plans include paying off debts and building their retirement home.
The ticket was purchased at Mason’s Kwik Way in Fall River, N.S. The retailer will receive a one per cent seller’s prize.
