Community partnership inching closer to buying Srs. Friendly Centre

FALL RIVER: All that’s standing between the Fall River Dragons Football program purchasing the Seniors Friendly Centre from HRM is a public hearing and HRM council’s approval.

The Dragons and the Saturday night jamboree members pursued the opportunity to purchase the building so they could keep it in the hands of the community and away from possible developers, who could have done what they like if they had the opportunity.

Councillor Steve Streatch said a public hearing will now be held at regional council where the Dragons will learn if HRM will indeed allow the purchase for under-market price of $1.

“About a year ago I was contacted by a community partnership that represents the best of what our communities offer,” said Streatch on Nov. 6. “They are proposing to buy the centre.”

He said a public hearing on the item was scheduled to be held on Nov. 14 at HRM council. He knew of no other groups that have put their name forward.

“HRM staff is recommending that approval be given to the Dragons/community application,” said Streatch. “I do support this partnership.”
