ELMSDALE: The official opening of the municipality’s new Aquatic Centre remains unknown because of COVID19.
In an email from The Laker News on May 21 asking for an update on the facility, located adjacent to the Lloyd E. Matheson Centre in Elmsdale, Jody MacArthur, spokeswoman for the Municipality of East Hants provided some insight in to what is going on during the shutdown, as a result of the provincial State of Emergency.
“We are waiting to hear from the Province and Public Health as to when we can open the aquatic centre while following Public Health directives,” said MacArthur.
She confirmed that there are costs to running the building while closed.
“We have done what we can to contain those costs,” she said.
MacArthur noted what MEH did right at the start when the state of emergency was put in place. It is their hope they will be able to bring those employees scheduled back when the facility opens.
“We laid off our casual aquatic staff very early on after COVID-19 forced the closure of the aquatic centre,” she said. “We hope to re-hire them as quickly as possible once we are able to re-open.”
